When Life Doesn’t Make Sense — Trusting That God Works All Things for Our Good

Scripture Focus: Romans 8:28 (KJV)
“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”

Life has a way of throwing curveballs we never saw coming. Disappointments, delays, heartbreaks, unanswered prayers — they leave us asking, “Why, God?” In those moments, Romans 8:28 becomes more than a verse. It becomes a lifeline.

"All Things" Means All Things

It’s easy to believe God is working for our good when life is going well — when prayers are answered, relationships are thriving, and doors are opening. But the real test of faith is trusting that even in the pain, even in the silence, even in the mess, God is still working.

Romans 8:28 doesn’t say “some things” or “only the good things.” It says all things. That includes the trials we don’t understand, the losses we grieve, and the seasons that feel like winter with no end in sight.

For Those Who Love Him

This promise isn't a blanket statement for everyone — it's a specific word to those who love God and are called according to His purpose. When our hearts are surrendered to Him, even the darkest valleys become part of a divine story.

Sometimes, what looks like a setback is actually a setup. What feels like rejection is God’s redirection. What appears to be the end might just be the beginning of something far greater than we imagined.

Purpose in the Process

God doesn’t waste pain. He doesn’t allow suffering for no reason. Every tear, every delay, every detour is being used to shape us, strengthen us, and draw us closer to His purpose. We may not see it now, but He sees the end from the beginning.

Think of Joseph — betrayed, sold into slavery, wrongfully imprisoned. For years, nothing made sense. But in the end, he was able to say to his brothers, “What you meant for evil, God meant for good” (Genesis 50:20). That is the power of Romans 8:28 in action.

Walking by Faith, Not by Sight

Faith doesn’t mean we always understand. Faith means we trust even when we don’t. When life doesn’t go the way we planned, we can still rest in the truth that God is in control — weaving every piece together for our ultimate good and His eternal glory.

So if you’re in a season of waiting, wondering, or weeping, take heart. You may not see the full picture yet, but God is still painting. Keep loving Him. Keep trusting Him. Because in the hands of a faithful God, all things truly do work together for your good.

Reflection Questions:

  1. What situation in your life are you struggling to understand right now?
  2. How can you shift your focus from “why is this happening?” to “God, what are You doing through this?”
  3. Are there past moments where you’ve seen God use something painful for good?

Closing Prayer:

Father, help us to trust You even when life doesn’t make sense. Teach us to believe that You are always working — even in the silence, even in the chaos. Strengthen our faith and remind us that all things truly do work together for good when we love You and walk in Your purpose. Amen.
